It is with heavy hearts but with joyful memories that we announce the passing of Voit Kent Hurst, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born on January 10, 1945, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Voit peacefully left us on October 11, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Voit was married for 58 wonderful years to his loving wife, Patsy Hurst. A devoted father to his daughter, Tracey Kiser, and son, Bradley Hurst, he embraced the role of family man with great passion. Voit took immense joy in being a grandfather to his grandchildren: Morgan, Mattie, Brody, Brycen, and Colbi.
Voit was known for his competitiveness and exceptional athleticism. He was an avid golfer, and a proud member of Holly Tree Country Club, where over the last decade he had shot under his age over 200 times. He served in the military as part of the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Voit dedicated much of his professional life to sales in the carpet and building products industries, where he made lasting connections and friendships. You could always count on Voit for a good story and a good laugh!
In loving memory of Voit, a memorial service will be held at Covenant Church, Old Spartanburg Hwy. in Greer, S.C., on October 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., where family and friends will gather to celebrate Voit’s life, honoring his legacy of family and service.
As we remember Voit, let us carry forward the lessons he imparted: the importance of his faith, family, the joy of sports and competition, and the power of positivity and strength in adverse situations. He will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered in our hearts and stories.

Is it true after two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as Guard of the Tomb, that there are only 600 presently worn, and that the Guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin?
The Tomb Guard Identification Badge (TGIB) is awarded after the Sentinel passes a series of tests. The TGIB is permanently awarded after a Sentinel has served nine months as a Sentinel at the Tomb. Over 600 have been awarded since its creation in the late 1950's (on average 10 per year). And while the TGIB can be revoked, the offense must be such that it discredits the Tomb of the Unknowns. Revocation is at the 3rd Infantry Regimental Commander’s discretion and can occur while active duty or even when the Sentinel is a civilian. The TGIB is a full size award, worn on the right pocket of the uniform jacket, not a lapel pin.
